1st  Confederate Artillery Battalion

The 1st Confederate Artillery Battery [aka: 1st Louisiana Battery] was organized in New Orleans (29 Oct 61) with 120 men who had enlisted in the regular Confederate army for five years. Joined to Allen's Brigade, the battery was engaged in the battle for Baton Rouge (5 Aug 1862) and then moved to Port Hudson as part of the garrison. The battery crossed the Mississippi and fought at Koch's Plantation (24 Sept 62) and at Labadieville (27 Oct 62). Later they were involved with Union gunboats (3 Nov 62) along Bayou Teche. The following year, the battery was engaged at Ft. Bisland (12-13 April 63) and formed part of the rear guard, with Col. Thomas Green's Texas Cavalry, for the retreating General Richard Taylor. The battery operated with General William Steele's Texas Cavalry Brigade and skirmished near Cloutierville (23-24 April 64). They fought at Mansura (16 May 64) and at Yellow Bayou (18 May 64). During the fall and winter of 1864, the battery was part of General Camille J. Polignac's and then General John H. Forney's Division. At the end of the war, they were stationed at Tyler, Texas. They were surrendered with the forces of General E. Kirby Smith, 26 May 1865.
Battery Officers: Captains. John T. Mason Barnes, Oliver J. Semmes; Lieutenants. T. K. Fauntleroy, J. D. Mayes, J. A. A. West
Armaments: two 3-inch Rifles, and four 6-lb Smoothbores (11--23 April 1863)
